Wetsuit Thickness: The Water Temperature Chart

Wetsuit thickness is measured in millimeters and written as two numbers — the torso thickness followed by the extremity thickness. A 4/3mm suit has 4mm of neoprene through the torso and 3mm in the arms and legs. The torso gets thicker material because your core needs the most insulation, while thinner extremities preserve paddling mobility.

Here's the breakdown by water temperature:

Above 72F (22C) — Tropics and Summer Peaks

Recommended: Rashguard, boardshorts, or spring suit (2mm)

At these temperatures, thermal protection is minimal. A rashguard handles sun protection and minor wind chill. If you run cold or surf at dawn, a 2mm spring suit (short arms, short legs) adds enough warmth without overheating.

62-72F (17-22C) — The 3/2mm Zone

Recommended: 3/2mm fullsuit

This is the most common wetsuit sold worldwide and the workhorse suit for most California, Atlantic coast summer, European summer, and Australian winter surfers. A 3/2mm fullsuit covers your full body with enough neoprene to handle two to three-hour sessions comfortably in this range.

55-62F (13-17C) — The 4/3mm Zone

Recommended: 4/3mm fullsuit, optional booties

This is Northern California winter, Pacific Northwest spring and fall, and UK summer territory. The extra millimeter in the torso makes a meaningful difference over multi-hour sessions. Below 58F, most surfers add 3mm booties — your feet lose heat fast because they're submerged and relatively still compared to your paddling arms.

48-55F (9-13C) — The 5/4mm Zone

Recommended: 5/4mm fullsuit with hood, boots, and gloves

Now you're in serious cold-water territory — Pacific Northwest winter, Northeast US winter, Northern Europe. At these temperatures, exposed skin goes numb within minutes. A 5/4mm suit with sealed seams, built-in or separate hood, 5mm boots, and 3-5mm gloves is the standard kit. Suit quality matters enormously here because any flushing at the neck or wrists sends ice water against your core.

Below 48F (9C) — Extreme Cold

Recommended: 6/5mm or thicker, full accessories

Great Lakes winter, Iceland, northern Scotland, far northern Pacific. These conditions demand the thickest neoprene available, premium seam construction, an integrated hood, and thick gloves and boots. Session length is often limited by hand dexterity rather than core temperature.

Materials: Not All Neoprene Is Equal

The rubber your wetsuit is made of affects warmth, stretch, weight, and durability — and the gap between entry-level and premium neoprene is significant.

Standard Neoprene

Found in budget suits. Provides adequate insulation but is stiffer, heavier, and takes longer to dry. Fine for casual surfers in mild water who surf a few times a month.

Limestone Neoprene

Most mid-range and premium suits use limestone-based neoprene instead of petroleum-based. It's lighter, more flexible, retains less water, and insulates better per millimeter. If you surf more than once a week, the upgrade to limestone neoprene is worth it.

Japanese Neoprene (Yamamoto)

The gold standard. Yamamoto neoprene — particularly their #39 and #40 grades — is the lightest, stretchiest, and warmest neoprene commercially available. Suits using Yamamoto rubber feel noticeably different on the first paddle out: less restriction, less weight pulling at your shoulders, and faster drying. The tradeoff is cost (expect to pay 30-50% more) and slightly reduced durability compared to stiffer alternatives.

Graphene and Thermal Linings

Many modern suits add thermal lining on the chest panels — a fleece-like or metallic-coated inner material that traps heat against your skin. These linings meaningfully extend session time in cold water. Graphene-infused neoprene, a newer addition, distributes heat more evenly across the suit. Both add cost but deliver real warmth benefits in sub-60F water.

Seams are the weak point of every wetsuit. How they're constructed determines how much cold water enters the suit — and how long the suit lasts.

Flatlock Stitched

Thread passes completely through both panels of neoprene, leaving visible stitch holes on both sides. Water flows freely through these holes. Acceptable for warm water suits (spring suits, 2mm) where minor flushing doesn't matter. Not suitable for cold water.

Glued and Blindstitched (GBS)

The standard for cold water suits. Panels are glued together at the edges, then stitched from one side only — the needle penetrates partway through but not all the way, leaving no through-holes. This dramatically reduces water entry. Most 3/2mm and 4/3mm suits use GBS construction throughout.

Sealed and Taped

Premium suits add an interior liquid tape or weld over GBS seams, creating a waterproof barrier even if the glue or stitching fails over time. Some suits use exterior taping as well. This is the standard for 5/4mm and above and a worthwhile upgrade on 4/3mm suits for cold water surfers.

Entry Systems: Chest Zip vs. Back Zip vs. Zipperless

Back Zip

The traditional entry system. A long zipper runs from the lower back to the upper neck, with a velcro flap closing over the top. Easiest to get in and out of — important for beginners or anyone who struggles with tight-fitting suits. The downside: back zips create a long seam across the upper back that can flush water, especially during duck dives. A good back zip suit with an internal flap mitigates this, but chest zip and zipperless designs are inherently more watertight in this area.

Chest Zip

A shorter zipper runs horizontally across the upper chest. You step into the suit and pull the top over your head like a shirt, then zip across the chest. More watertight than back zip because the zipper sits against your chest rather than facing incoming water. The tradeoff is a tighter entry and exit — especially when the suit is wet. Chest zip is the most popular entry system in performance and cold water suits.

Zipperless

No zipper at all — you enter through a wide neck or chest opening that seals with an internal flap and overlapping neoprene. Maximum flexibility and warmth, with no zipper to fail or flush. The tradeoff is the most difficult entry and exit, and the neck seal needs to fit precisely or it becomes the primary flushing point. Best for experienced surfers who prioritize performance and know their sizing well.

Getting the Fit Right

A wetsuit only works if it fits. Too loose and it flushes. Too tight and it restricts your paddling and breathing. Here's how to evaluate fit:

Key Fit Points

Neck: Snug but not choking. You should be able to breathe deeply without the collar digging in. Any gap here is the number one source of cold water entry. Run two fingers inside the collar — they should fit but not move freely.

Shoulders and armpits: The suit should sit flush against your shoulders without pulling when your arms are at your sides. Raise both arms overhead and simulate paddling. If the suit pulls hard at the shoulders or rises at the wrists, it's too tight in the torso or too short in the arms.

Torso: Snug against the chest and stomach with no air pockets. You should be able to take a full breath without the suit restricting your rib expansion. Small wrinkles at the lower back are normal and disappear when prone on your board.

Knees and ankles: The knee panels should sit over your kneecaps, not above or below. Ankle cuffs should be snug to prevent flushing — excess material bunched at the ankle is a sign the suit is too long.

Crotch: The suit's crotch seam should sit at your body's crotch. If it hangs low, the suit is too long in the torso and will restrict your pop-up. This is one of the most common fit problems and one that many surfers tolerate when they shouldn't.

Sizing Between Brands

Wetsuit sizing is not standardized across brands. A Medium Tall in one brand may fit like a Large in another. Always consult the specific brand's size chart and measure your height, chest, and waist. If you're between sizes, go smaller — neoprene stretches. A suit that's slightly tight on day one will break in to a perfect fit within three to five sessions. A suit that's slightly loose on day one will only get looser.

When to Replace Your Wetsuit

Neoprene degrades over time. Here are the signs your suit needs replacing:

  • You're cold in conditions that used to be comfortable: The neoprene has compressed and lost insulating capacity, even though it looks intact.
  • Seams are separating or peeling: Glue failure at high-stress areas (underarms, knees, inner thighs) means water is entering freely.
  • The zipper sticks or won't close fully: Zipper failure is usually terminal — replacement zippers rarely match the original.
  • Significant tears or holes: Small nicks in the surface rubber are cosmetic. Tears that go through to the inner lining compromise insulation.
  • The suit is noticeably looser: Over-stretched neoprene won't snap back. If the suit hangs where it used to hug, its sealing is compromised.

How to Make Your Wetsuit Last

The difference between a one-year suit and a three-year suit is almost entirely about care:

  1. Rinse in fresh water after every session — salt crystals degrade neoprene and stiffen seams.
  2. Hang on a wide hanger or draped over a rail — thin wire hangers create shoulder dimples that become permanent creases and failure points.
  3. Dry out of direct sunlight — UV breaks down neoprene faster than anything else. A shaded, ventilated area is ideal.
  4. Never leave it balled up in your car — heat and compression are the second-fastest way to kill neoprene after UV.
  5. Turn it inside out to dry the lining — the lining touches your skin and holds the most moisture. Dry it first, then flip and dry the exterior.
  6. Don't use hot water — lukewarm at most. Hot water degrades the glue at seam joints.

Budget vs. Premium: What You Actually Get

A $150 wetsuit and a $400 wetsuit look similar on the rack. Here's where the money goes:

If you're buying your first wetsuit, keep it simple:

  1. Check your local water temperature — look at monthly averages, not just today's reading.
  2. Pick the thickness that matches using the chart above. When in doubt, go one step warmer — you can always open the neck to cool down, but you can't add insulation to a suit that's too thin.
  3. Prioritize fit over brand — try on multiple brands if possible. The best wetsuit is the one that fits your body.
  4. Start with a back zip — easier entry and exit while you're learning to manage a wetsuit.
  5. Budget at least mid-range if you plan to surf regularly. The comfort and durability difference is significant.
