Walk into any surf shop and you'll see two types of surfboards sitting in the racks. They might look similar — same shapes, same fin setups, similar prices. But pick them up and you'll notice the difference immediately. One is noticeably lighter. One has a different sound when you tap the deck. One flexes differently under pressure.
These are the two dominant surfboard constructions: epoxy (EPS/epoxy) and traditional fiberglass (PU/polyester). The difference isn't cosmetic. It affects how the board paddles, how it responds in turns, how it handles dings, and how long it lasts.
Most surf shops won't explain this well because their staff assumes you already know. Most online guides bury the practical differences under material science jargon. This guide cuts straight to what actually matters when you're choosing between the two.
What "Fiberglass" and "Epoxy" Actually Mean
Every surfboard is a foam core wrapped in fiberglass cloth and sealed with resin. The difference between the two constructions comes down to which foam and which resin is used.
Traditional Fiberglass (PU/Polyester)
- Core: Polyurethane (PU) foam — dense, heavy, uniform cell structure
- Resin: Polyester resin — bonds chemically with PU foam
- Glass: Fiberglass cloth (typically 4oz or 6oz)
This is the original surfboard construction that's been the standard since the 1960s. When surfers say "fiberglass board," they mean a PU foam core glassed with polyester resin. It's what most custom shapers work with and what most pro surfers ride.
Epoxy (EPS/Epoxy)
- Core: Expanded polystyrene (EPS) foam — lighter, made of fused beads, more buoyant
- Resin: Epoxy resin — required because polyester resin dissolves EPS foam
- Glass: Fiberglass cloth (same as traditional)
Epoxy boards use a lighter foam core sealed with a stronger resin. Some brands (like Firewire) use additional materials like balsa wood, carbon fiber, or parabolic stringers for extra strength and controlled flex. The technology has improved dramatically in the last decade.

Weight
Epoxy wins. EPS foam is significantly lighter than PU foam. An epoxy shortboard might weigh 5-6 pounds where an equivalent PU board weighs 6.5-8 pounds. That difference is noticeable when you're carrying the board to the beach, paddling into waves, and maneuvering on the face.
Lighter isn't always better for performance — some surfers prefer the heft of a PU board because the weight helps drive through turns and provides momentum in bigger surf. But for paddling, catching waves, and general ease of use, lighter boards have a clear advantage.
Durability
Epoxy wins by a wide margin. Epoxy resin is substantially harder and more impact-resistant than polyester resin. An EPS/epoxy board can take knocks, drops, and board-to-board collisions that would leave a PU board with pressure dings and cracks.
PU boards are fragile. Knee dents form on the deck within weeks of regular use. Heel dents appear in the tail. The nose crunches if it hits the sand wrong. A season of heavy use leaves a PU board looking beaten up with soft spots across the deck.
Epoxy boards resist all of this. They're not indestructible — they still crack on hard impacts — but they last significantly longer before showing structural wear.
Buoyancy and Paddle Power
Epoxy wins. EPS foam is less dense than PU foam, so an epoxy board of the same dimensions floats higher in the water. That extra buoyancy translates directly to paddle speed and wave-catching ability.

Flex and Feel
PU/polyester wins for most experienced surfers. This is the big one — the reason PU boards persist despite being heavier, less durable, and less buoyant.
PU foam with polyester resin has a natural flex pattern that surfers describe as "alive" or "responsive." The board bends subtly through turns, loads energy, and releases it. This flex-to-speed relationship is organic and predictable. It's why surfers talk about a board feeling "good under their feet" — they're usually describing the flex characteristics of traditional construction.
Epoxy boards, especially early generations, were criticized for feeling "dead" or "chattery." The stiffer resin and lighter foam didn't flex the same way. Modern epoxy technology has closed this gap significantly — brands like Firewire and JS Industries have engineered flex patterns into their epoxy models using varied core densities, parabolic carbon strips, and layup strategies — but the difference is still noticeable to experienced surfers.
If you're an intermediate surfer or below, you're unlikely to feel this difference. The improved paddle power and durability of epoxy will benefit you more than the flex characteristics of PU.
Ding Repair
PU is easier to repair at home but more vulnerable. Polyester resin dings can be patched with widely available Solarez UV-cure kits or traditional fiberglass repair materials from any surf shop. The repair bonds well and the materials are forgiving.
Epoxy boards require epoxy-specific resin for repairs. Using polyester resin on an EPS foam board will melt the foam — this is the most common and most expensive repair mistake in surfing. Epoxy repair materials are slightly harder to find and less forgiving to work with, but the trade-off is that you'll need repairs far less often.
Heat Sensitivity
PU handles heat better. EPS foam boards can delaminate if left in direct sun or in a hot car for extended periods. The air trapped in the EPS foam expands with heat, pushing the fiberglass skin away from the foam core. This creates bubbles on the deck that are difficult to repair.
PU boards are more heat-resistant. They can still be damaged by extreme heat, but it takes much more exposure. If you regularly leave your board in a hot car or on the beach in direct sun, PU is the safer choice — or invest in a reflective board bag.
Price
Roughly comparable, with caveats. Off-the-rack epoxy boards and PU boards in the same size range are similarly priced — typically $500-$900 for a standard shortboard. High-tech epoxy constructions (Firewire Helium, Slater Designs FRK, etc.) often cost more due to advanced materials and manufacturing.
Custom-shaped boards are almost always PU/polyester, because that's what most shapers work with. A custom PU board from a local shaper typically costs $600-$1,000 — competitive with or cheaper than a premium off-the-rack epoxy board.
Environmental Impact
Both have issues, but epoxy has a slight edge. PU foam blanks use TDI (toluene diisocyanate), which is toxic to produce. Polyester resin releases volatile organic compounds (VOCs) during lamination. EPS foam is more recyclable and epoxy resin produces fewer VOCs, though neither construction is truly eco-friendly.
Some manufacturers are moving toward bio-resins, recycled foam cores, and sustainable materials. If environmental impact matters to you, look for brands that specifically address their manufacturing process.
Which Construction Should You Choose?
Choose Epoxy If You:
- Are a beginner or intermediate surfer
- Want maximum durability and don't want to worry about dings
- Surf mostly small to medium waves (head high and under)
- Want better paddle power and wave-catching ability
- Travel with your boards and need them to survive airports
- Want a board that lasts multiple seasons without going soft
Choose PU/Fiberglass If You:
- Are an intermediate-to-advanced surfer who values feel and responsiveness
- Surf powerful, hollow waves where rail engagement matters
- Want a custom-shaped board from a local shaper
- Prefer the traditional flex and weight of a surfboard
- Want easier DIY ding repair
- Are chasing specific performance characteristics for your surfing level
Choose Based on Board Type
Some board types work better in one construction than the other:
- Shortboards (performance): PU preferred by most advanced surfers for flex and feel; epoxy works well for small-wave-focused shortboards where paddle power matters
- Fish and retro shapes: Both work great; epoxy adds float that complements the design philosophy
- Mid-lengths and funboards: Epoxy shines here — the extra buoyancy makes these boards incredibly fun and easy to ride

The Bottom Line
The construction debate is really a priorities debate. If you value durability, paddle power, and low maintenance, go epoxy. If you value feel, flex, and custom shaping, go PU/fiberglass.
For the majority of surfers — anyone from beginner to solid intermediate — epoxy is the better choice. The durability alone saves money over time, and the extra paddle power helps you catch more waves and progress faster.
For advanced surfers, it depends on what you're surfing and what you're after. Many advanced surfers ride both, choosing PU for performance sessions in good waves and epoxy for small-wave fun boards or travel boards.
The good news: modern construction technology has narrowed the gap. Today's best epoxy boards feel significantly better than the chattery, lifeless epoxy boards of a decade ago. And today's PU boards benefit from better foam blanks and resin systems than ever before.
